About Ron Blum

Ron Blum was introduced to the black and white photographic trade by his mother who worked in a number of photographic studios in the glass plate era as a photo retoucher and colour artist. In those days, photographs were coloured by hand. Ron is a retired automatic-control engineer who worked in oil refineries in several countries over a period of 30 years.

He lives in Oaklands Park, South Australia and has continued his interest in photography for about 60 years. For recreation, Ron enjoys walking and marathon kayaking.

Who was George Rose?

George Rose, a Melbourne photographer started his photographic career around 1880 producing three-dimensional images. He called his business 'The Rose Stereograph Company'. He toured the world with his 3-D camera, producing stereographs for the home and overseas markets. Around 1912 he turned his attention to the production of postcards which had become very popular in Australia and overseas as they were a simple means of communication. They enabled short messages to be sent to family and friends, there was no room for complicated etiquette which inhibited letter writing amongst the ordinary folk. "Having a good time Mum, wish you were here" was all it took to personalise a card. With attractive images on the front, people loved and saved these cards, keeping them in albums and shoe boxes. Today they have become collector's items and are much treasured by historians for their record of past lives and forgotten places.
